1950s Hungarian Vitreous Enamel Industrial Pendant Light

A large dark grey / black vitreous enamel factory pendant light, salvaged from a railway station outside Budapest. This impressive industrial ceiling light was manufactured in the 1950s by EKA (Elektromos Készülékek és Anyagok Gyára)—Hungary’s principal state-run lighting and electrical equipment factory during the mid-20th century. Designed for railway platforms and large industrial halls, these fixtures are celebrated for their robust construction, heavy vitreous enamel work and distinctive mechanical detailing.

The pendant features a substantial two-part enamelled steel shade, finished in black with its original factory code “TYP 21925” and technical markings intact. A band of circular ventilation holes around the upper body adds character while referencing EKA’s early post-war design language. The lower shade is secured with original hinged steel latches, a signature detail found only on EKA’s 1950s models.

Below, a striking convex prismatic glass lens creates a soft yet focused spread of illumination, making the pendant as functional as it is sculptural. These lights were originally fitted with 400W mercury vapour lamps—common for large-scale industrial and railway lighting of the era—but have now been sensitively restored and rewired for modern use.

With their imposing presence, glossy enamel finish and authentic Eastern Bloc industrial heritage, these pendants make exceptional statement pieces for hospitality interiors, retail spaces or high-impact residential settings.

Rewired with new CE Certified or UL listed electrical components and supplied with ceiling hanging kit which includes a ceiling hook and allows for 1 meter drop from ceiling to base of light fixture. If you need longer or shorter drop lengths, please let us know.
