DESCRIPTION
This curved retro glass wall sconce uplighter was likely produced during the late 1960s to mid-1970s in Czechoslovakia, when many nationalised glassworks were experimenting with moulded and pressed glass techniques for domestic and public lighting. This period favoured clean, organic silhouettes and satin glass finishes that softened electric light — a hallmark of the Brutalist and Mid-century Modern design language evolving under Eastern European functionalism.
The moulded glass diffuser, with its subtle curvature and flared top, is characteristic of architectural wall lighting used in theatres, hotels and public corridors throughout Czechoslovakia and East Germany during the 1970s. The satin yellow-green internal tint was applied to create a warm, ambient uplight — flattering and efficient in minimalist interiors.
The uplighter’s steel wall mount and single retaining bolt were typical of modular designs made for easy servicing, aligning with the era’s industrial efficiency. Ideal for uplighting walls where soft illumination is required.
Professionally restored and rewired by Loomlight, this retro glass wall sconce embodies the refined simplicity of Czechoslovakian mid-century lighting design, where form and function merge beautifully.
